Why do American tv shows always have character refer to each other by there Last names?

Why do American tv shows always have character refer to each other by
there Last names, for example Mouder and scaly and castle.
This concept is used on American TV more then in British or Irish TV.
It's done in comedy as well as dramas, like futurama do it all the
time.
