Was Anakin Skywalker really the "Chosen One"?

I know he was, but I am in a bit of a battle with my Star Wars geek
friend (lol) over whether or not it was true. In ROTJ Anakin kills
Palpatine to save Luke's life. He died  Anakin died too while trying
to save Luke. Thus the Sith was destroyed. That's why Luke sees Anakin
(not the old fart they used in the beginning)  Obi Wan  Yoda at the
end. Balance to the force had been restored. Please tell me my friend
is wrong  Luke was NOT the chosen one.
